An exceptionally powerful extra virgin olive oil made from 100% Coratina in Puglia. Intensely green, aromatic and complex, with pronounced bitterness and pepperiness. From a single family estate and limited to only 5,000 numbered bottles a year.
Coratina without compromise
The Galantino Gran Cru Coratina is made exclusively from Coratina olives grown on the family estate La Fenice – Coppa Malva near Trinitapoli in Puglia.
While many producers blend Coratina with milder olive varieties, Galantino allows this powerful southern Italian cultivar to speak entirely for itself. The result is an intensely green, aromatic and distinctive extra virgin olive oil.
This is an oil for enthusiasts who do not try to avoid bitterness and pepperiness, but appreciate them as part of a powerful and high-quality olive oil.
Galantino describes this Gran Cru as intensely fruity, fresh, aromatic, penetrating and powerful. The aroma reveals pronounced green notes including artichoke and thistle.
On the palate, firm but pleasant bitterness is followed by distinct pepperiness. Beneath that are complex vegetal notes and a long aromatic finish with grass, almond and more artichoke.
It is precisely the harmony between fruitiness, bitterness and pepperiness that makes this much more than simply a “strong” olive oil. Its power is supported by complexity and length.
The Coratina olives for this Gran Cru come exclusively from the Galantino family’s own olive groves on the La Fenice – Coppa Malva estate in Trinitapoli.
That provenance matters. Rather than combining olives from different areas, Galantino deliberately chooses one cultivar from one specific family estate. This gives the Gran Cru a clear origin and identity.
The Coratina olives are harvested by hand in October and November. According to the estate, Gianvito Galantino personally follows every stage of production through to the final sensory assessment.
The olives are crushed in the estate mill using granite millstones and then cold extracted with a modern decanter. Galantino therefore combines traditional elements with controlled modern extraction.
Coratina is one of Italy’s most distinctive olive varieties. A good Coratina can deliver firm bitterness and a clearly peppery sensation – qualities that can feel surprisingly intense to inexperienced tasters.
In a good extra virgin olive oil, however, that bitterness and pepperiness are not faults. They belong to the cultivar’s natural flavour profile and are exactly what make Coratina so recognisable.
In our Olijfolie Academie, we take a closer look at the origins of Coratina, its character and why this olive variety can produce such strikingly powerful oils.

This Gran Cru works particularly well with dishes that have plenty of character of their own. Think of bruschetta, pulses, hearty soups, roasted and grilled vegetables and barbecued meat.
Poured over a good steak or simply served with fresh bread, the oil immediately demonstrates what makes Coratina so distinctive.
Use it especially as a finishing oil when you want the olive oil to become a genuine part of the flavour of the dish.
Galantino produces only 5,000 numbered bottles of this Gran Cru Coratina each year.
The combination of a single family estate, hand harvesting, complete control over production and a small production run makes this one of the distinctive cuvées in the Galantino range.
