Why this olive oil is special
La Patràun is a monovarietal Extra Virgin olive oil made from 100% Peranzana, a characteristic olive variety from Puglia. With this oil, Sabino Leone shows a very different side of southern Italy from the powerful Coratina. Peranzana is more refined and approachable, while still offering enough bitterness, spice and aromatic depth to remain genuinely interesting.
The result is a beautifully balanced olive oil in which artichoke, tomato leaf, green almond and green herbs stand out. In our Olive Oil Guide, La Patràun scores 8 for fruitiness and complexity and 5 for both bitterness and pepperiness. It sits precisely between expressive power and refined elegance. A particularly versatile oil for anyone looking for Italian class without overpowering the dish.
La Patràun is produced by the Sabino Leone family in Canosa di Puglia. Peranzana is a native olive variety that thrives particularly well on the stony soils of this region. The name La Patràun refers in the local dialect to the lady of the house or mistress of the land: strong, independent and elegant at the same time. That is precisely the character Sabino Leone aims to capture in this olive oil. The producer describes it as refined and delicate, yet unmistakably full of personality.
La Patràun shows exactly what Sabino Leone excels at: working with distinctive local olive varieties and turning them into precise, beautifully balanced premium oils. This 100% Peranzana combines fruitiness, freshness and aromatic depth with an especially fine balance between bitterness and pepperiness.
Analytically, the 2025/2026 harvest is impressive as well. A polyphenol level of approximately 476 mg/kg is reported, together with very low acidity. That fits perfectly with the fresh, clean and lively character of this olive oil.
And the quality standards at this estate are exceptionally high. Sabino Leone ranks number 1 in the world for the 2025/2026 harvest in the World's Best Olive Oils ranking with Don Gioacchino. La Patràun is a different oil made from a different olive variety, but it comes from the same mill, the same philosophy and the same uncompromising attention to detail. This Peranzana therefore comes from a producer that currently belongs quite literally to the absolute world elite.
