Two Greek extra virgin olive oils, but certainly not two versions of the same thing. Powerful Vassilakis Estate from Crete meets aromatic Oliorama Classic PGI Olympia. Two regions, two producers and two very different expressions of Greek olive oil.
Greece twice. Never the same.
Anyone who thinks Greek olive oil has one particular style will quickly change their mind with this duet. These two bottles show just how much origin, olive variety, harvest timing and producer can influence an extra virgin olive oil.
Vassilakis Estate comes from Crete and clearly favours power, green character and intensity. Oliorama Classic PGI Olympia comes from the western Peloponnese and is more aromatic and layered, moving between green and riper notes.
They do not need to taste alike to make an excellent tasting set together. Quite the opposite.
The Vassilakis Estate Limited Edition is the premium olive oil of the Vassilakis family estate on Crete. The olives come from the estate’s own groves.
This is the powerful bottle in the duet: green, intense and distinctly bitter and peppery. An olive oil that does not quietly disappear into a dish, but deliberately becomes part of its flavour.
Use it with bread, grilled vegetables, robust salads, meat, pulses and dishes where a good extra virgin olive oil is welcome to have the final word.
Classic PGI Olympia by Oliorama comes from the Ancient Olympia region and is made from Koroneiki and Kolireiki olives.
The aroma opens green with herbs, tomato, artichoke and fresh grass. Softer notes of almond, nuts and ripe fruit then emerge. A peppery finish keeps the oil lively and interesting.
That makes Classic particularly gastronomic: excellent with fish, salads, vegetables, pasta and meat, yet approachable enough to put on the table often.
Taste the two oils side by side and the difference becomes immediately clear. Vassilakis is more powerful and direct. Oliorama Classic is aromatic and layered, moving from green to riper notes.
That is precisely why we do not give this set an average flavour profile. An average of two very different olive oils would tell you almost nothing.
The contrast is exactly what makes this set interesting.
Crete and the western Peloponnese are both classic Greek olive-oil regions, yet their landscapes and local traditions are distinctly different.
Koroneiki plays the leading role on Crete. Around Olympia, Koroneiki grows alongside local cultivars such as Kolireiki. These two bottles therefore introduce not only two producers, but two Greek olive-oil regions.
A small tour of Greece without the inconvenience of packing a suitcase.
Simply put both bottles on the table
For a small tasting, you need little more than two glasses or dishes and some good bread. Taste Oliorama Classic first and then move on to the more powerful Vassilakis Estate.
Then try both oils with the same dish. A tomato salad, grilled vegetables or simply bread with a little sea salt is enough to show how much difference olive oil can make.
Before you know it, a simple lunch has turned into a serious discussion about olive oil. We are quite happy to take that risk.
This Greek duet makes an excellent gift for an enthusiastic home cook or anyone who wants to discover just how different high-quality extra virgin olive oils can be.
Not two nearly identical bottles, but two distinctive styles that genuinely offer something to compare.
Koroneiki plays an important role in both oils, yet they taste clearly different. That is exactly why olive variety alone can never predict the style of an olive oil.
Origin, climate, olive ripeness, harvest timing and decisions at the mill all help determine what eventually ends up in the glass.
